Liberty Christian School is an interdenominational school serving preschool through 12th grades at two campuses in Anderson, IN. Founded in 1976, Liberty Christian is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International.
Liberty Christian School was established through a committee of people from the community who met to plan and pray for more than a year. In September 1976, there were 24 students in K-4th grade in a building owned by the Church of the Brethren on McKinley Street. The school had 4 full-time teachers, including Gwelda Walker, who volunteered to be the school’s first principal for 3 years, without compensation. Between 1977 and 1979, Liberty added grades 5-8 and a preschool class and grew into two additional buildings–one offered by the South Meridian Church of God and another by the Mounds Baptist Church. In 1981, Liberty purchased the former Fall Creek Heights School on South Rangeline Road for $40,000 and added a ninth rade. Liberty purchased what had been Anderson School Corporation’s Washington Elementary School on Columbus Ave. in 1982 for $81,000. In subsequent years, the school added grades and celebrated its first commencement–with three graduates, all of whom went on to college– in 1985. In 2000, Liberty purchased the Hillcrest property from the United Auto Workers’ Local 662 for $785,000. After refurbishing with help from volunteers, the building opened for the start of the 2002 school year.
